I have never received it before, and from what you have described, I am anticipating reading it.

As you can see, I am currently residing at Coleman Camp Federal Facility. Never in my wildest dreams did my plans in life include a federal prison sentence, especially at 69 years old.

I have led an outstanding, honorable life, helping my community in Miami, many Jewish organizations, helping homeless facilities, and serving on the Miami City Ballet board of directors. Blah, blah—I do not want to “toot my own horn,” but I had never been in trouble in my life.

Good family, worked hard at schooling, attaining my dream. A “nice Jewish girl” from a good background—yes, we wind up in prison too. Many are here with me at Camp Coleman.

I appreciate all that Aleph has done for me since I have been here. I enjoy my Shabbat services and the challah and honey.

I have always had a strong relationship with G-d, so I know coming here was just one of His plans for me. I just trust in Him because He always knows what is best.

I need another favor from you, if it is possible. I don’t know if this is the right department, but I need help finding an attorney who would help me with a legal matter against the correctional institution.

I am 4’11”. By law, they had no right to assign me to the top bunk, but they did. I fell, lost consciousness, suffered a concussion, a large bump on my head, a cracked collarbone, two broken ribs, and an injury to my foot.

Since that fall, I have had terrible migraines, and I experience pain in my back that feels like electricity running through my back and leg. All of this is documented in my medical records.

The institution offered physical therapy, but it did not help. They told me I might need surgery after I am released.

Meanwhile, I continue to live with pain that I never had before the fall.

Please help me find an attorney who would be willing to help me in this situation. It is almost impossible to find legal representation while I am here.

I hope I haven’t missed any issues. I absolutely love it! The article from Rabbi Shlomo Majeski about understanding back pain was so enlightening. I have suffered for years with back pain and after reading that article, I realized that every diagnosis was incorrect. I’ve since taken my health in my own hands and amazingly my back pain is gone. Thank you for your gift of the N’shei Chabad Newsletter. I am indigent and truly appreciate receiving the newsletter free of charge.

I am innocent of the charges against me and am completing the evidence for my petition for a writ of habeas corpus.

I am also facing the loss of my home. After I was incarcerated, I was unable to make the final year of payments on my 15-year mortgage. Although I had already paid for fourteen years, the property is now scheduled for a sheriff’s sale.

I filed for bankruptcy in an effort to obtain a stay of the sale. I am disabled and will be 66 years old in August. This has been my primary residence.

I have also been told that my home has been vandalized, and my daughter—who is also disabled—has been displaced after the bank changed the locks. The house has significant equity, and I am trying to understand whether it can legally be sold for the amount owed.

If possible, could you forward this letter to the Lawyers’ Network for Alternative Sentencing or the Center for Halacha and American Law?

I pray to G-d that someone through Aleph can assist me and my daughter, who is presently homeless.

At my age 81 1/2 yrs, reading is usually the one thing that I enjoy and am able to do.

Being incarcerated cuts us off from a lot of information on our religion and things in general. This will be helpful for the Jewish holidays… to know what we should expect from the BOP and Carswell. PLEASE, do send me the N’Shei Chabad News letter. I appreciated you including me on the mailing list. The fact that you are providing the subscription to me for free allows me access.

I only make 16¢ an hour and I also must purchase food and hygene products. Women at this prison like most others are usually indigent, by virtue of prolonged incarceration. Although women and men in N.Y.S. prisons are mandated to work 30 hrs a week minimum, they are paid 16¢ for most positions, except for industry, which makes .90 – 1.10¢ per hour, but there are only 2 such jobs in Bedford Hills. There are 850 women at Bedford Hilss and there are two positions at 90¢ per hour at the prison’s D.M.V. call center and that is only for Team Leaders.

We have grievedthe issue, that our inmate wages have not increased since 1973, yet due to inflation rates outside/inside of the prison our wages are decreasing in value steadily. At commissary, where we purchase our food, hygene and basic products, the buy limit for food was $55, now this year is gone up to $75.

The catch is because we are prisoners, we have no vote, no leverage with legislature/representation. In N.Y.S. inmate wages are set and regulated, not the Correctional Department. After Attica Riots 1971 the state set at 10% of standard min wages, inmate wages for their mandatory work/programs. Since then the standard minimum wages have increased exponentially due to inflation rates nationwide, however prison wages have remained the same since they were set. If it were adjusted to 10% of today’s wages we would get 90¢ an hour, much better than 16¢ for us.

One scholar at the Marymount-Manhattan College at Bedford Hill prison, another female prisoner actually wrote a paper in economics describing the problems incurred by the imprisoned population, especially female prisoners. Because inmate wages are decreasing in value and encumbrances that inmates are required to pay are increasing, inmates face an unduly harsh challenge to attempt rehabilitation in the midst of such deprivations. Her name is [Name omitted for privacy] and her paper was so well read and accurate. People need to see and understand what it’s like for us here. Perhaps if the public knew the plight of the incarcerated woman behind prison walls people would be compelled to advocate for us, as they do for animals. Although Hashem gave the human being speech to differentiate us from the animals, in prison we have no voice. The current prison system imposes upon women in America (N.Y.), upon human bodies and souls, real changes would preserve human rights. All lives matter, except the lives of the incarcerated woman in America’s mass incarceration era.

Thank you for giving me a free subscription for the past year 2017. I am requesting to continue to receive a free subscription. Yes, I am incarcerated at MDC for the past 11 months. I am the only Jewish female @ MDC. Yes, I have the treatment of being treated differently because I am Jewish in a BAD way. I would like to have a PEN PAL visit if anyone from your community has the time to do so. It is very hard to be Jewish, being the only female Jewish. I make Kiddish, light the electrical candles, daven every day, and say Tehillim etc. The guyiom mock me but I ignore them. Please let the community know that a Jewish Woman has no place in a prison. The community needs to band together and give BOND money for a  women who is incarcerated. In my case, I could have been out before my sentence if people would have banded together to give BOND money.  I had no way of getting things together before I was sentenced, ie rent money, commissary money (money into my account). I only receive money from Aleph which is $54.00/month. It helps to provide for some of my needs but not all of my needs. A prisoner needs to buy their personal needs. I need to provide for food for my Sabbaths.

A Sabbath menu is as follows: A fruit, cold bologna (cold cuts), vegetable juice and 2 pieces of bread. After Sabbath day is tuna, vegetable juice, a fruit and 2 pieces of bread. Every thing is cold! If you know anyone who could put some money into my account give them this information Western Union Quick Collect form: amount of money in words. Pay to [Name omitted for privacy]. They should find someone in Western Union who knows how to do it.

I have a special story to tell when I get out and would like to write a book about it. Let me know if you know anyone who could help me.

When I was incarcerated in the women’s prison in Memphis I received one issue. Then in August of 2016 that facility closed and we were all transferred up here to Henning. I enjoyed the one issue I received and I look forward to us connecting again so I can receive future mailings.

My ancestors came from Womza or Lomza which was part of Russia until after WWI when the borders changed and it was then in Poland. So… as you see, I feel a special connection to all things Chabad which originated in Russia.

Dear N’shei Chabad,

I’m currently incarcerated and have been for the past almost 6 years. I have been receiving the newsletter for almost 2 years. I am at my third “institution” and have been here for just over a year. I had to place myself in protective custody and the next day the newsletter arrived. I am very scared and feel so alone. At first the only thing allowed for me to have was my siddur, B”H. Then I received the magazine and what do I open up to? The words of the song “I believe in Hashem”! Of course, I cried reading it.

I recently started to daven more and say Tehillim, both the day of the week and the daily assigned and my “Kapital.” I come from a non religious family and have been seeking my roots. I already read the magazine cover to cover but it was Shabbos, I couldn’t underline a thing, so I restarted again today. Which is great, I need to soak up all that I can. I enjoy reading everything, even people different perspective and points of view! I was always told “where there are 2 Jews there are 3 points of view” :).

I can’t wait to get out so I can look up the older publications that people are always mentioning. Please continue with all the great work the whole staff does. This one (not so lonely) soul truly appreciates it.

The Nissan edition of your Newsletter finally arrived. Thank you so much for blessing me with your magazine. I read it cover to cover and think imagine if every young Jewish woman read and listened to the wisdom of the people who write your articles, the world would be amazing. Filled with strong Jewish woman who realize the strength they have comes from within. That modesty is realizing that we are precious to G-d- and our bodies are not who we are- Take away the outward beauty and see the true light of Hashem.

I really liked what Baila Vorhand had to say: “For me to approach the world with the goal or making a spiritual revolution may seem like super-over-confidence. But what if I’m just a servant of Hashem doing my duty?” How incredible!!
